Spelling Bee competition 2019

The MNFoundation, founded by a Khwezi member, Mzikayise Ndlovu, together with Radio Khwezi, hosted a first of its kind spelling bee competition

on 6 June 2019. The event attracted over 17 local and surrounding primary schools all in a quest to get the 1st prize! The event was attended by principals and teachers from participating schools and a representative of the department of education.

Principal Maharaj emphasised in his speech the importance of spelling bees and  how they challenge individuals to further reading and studying. It takes courage to stand and battle out with other learners there are many players but there can only be one winner the spellers were told.

The guest speaker motivated the learners by introducing an 11 year old learner, Ciara Valentine, who already authored and published two of her own books. Learners were motivated and challenge to explore different angles of life and use their skills to write anything they like and love. The audience was given a platform to ask questions and they were responded to.

After the speeches spellers took to the stage to show their skills in spelling. One by one they took to the stage. Some of the present competitors made it through to second round, some fell out. The competition went on to round 3 elimination stage.

The participating schools were: Khomba PR, OCheni PR, Ogagwini PR, Zamazisa PR, UMphumulo PR, Lusizolwethu PR, Bonginkosi PR, Balcombs hill PR, Masiwela PR, Joel PR, Hlomakancane PR, Thulini PR, Ekunqobeni PR, Sibanisethu PR, Mpangele PR, Hhomoyi PR, and Bangumusa Primary.

The spelling bee winners were:
1st place: Anele Mwandla from Khomba Primary
2nd place: Londeka Mthiyane from Lusizolwethu Primary school
3rd place: Nqobile Bhengu from Lusizolwethu Primary school

The winners walked away with amazing prizes and gifts, among them school dictionaries, calculators, trophies, medals and certificates.

The circuit manager Mrs Sikhosana applauded the event and thanked the MNf foundation for an event that recognised learners and gave them a chance from a tender age to showcase their talent. She promised to support future events and also thanked the team that worked tirelessly to make the event a success.
